The Art of Theatrical DirectionDirecting a theatrical production requires that an individual bring a broad knowledge of the various roles that need to be executed across a production. A good director will have had experience as a stage manager, technical and artistic team member, and performer. In addition, a director needs to reflect on and consider their own philosophy of process and understand how to bring that philosophy into practice through communication and procedure.

Participants in the Forst Inn Arts Collective Assistant Director Program should have had experience on stage, in technical crews, and in the design elements. Appropriate candidates are attached to one of our mainstage productions as a learning experience.
Assistant Directors attend auditions and rehearsals for the production and observe the production creation process with an eye to understanding and skill development. They meet during the production process with our Artistic Director to discuss and process their observations and insights. In addition, program participants read A Sense of Direction, by William Ball. AD Program participants do not have specific responsibilities in the production and are expected to observe quietly, rather than participate in the process.
If you are interested in participating in this program, send an email and resume to [email protected]. Positions on specific productions are filled as needed, so inquiries are welcome at any time.
