Lamplighter Session - North

When the lamplighter goes to work, one light at a time gets illuminated in the darkness, and a trail of light emerges.  “You don’t know where he’s going, but you know where he’s been.”

Lamplighter Session - North

July 18th, 7:30

What is a Lamplighter Session?

Lamplighter sessions were created by Peter Mulvey at Bill Camplin and Kitty Welch’s Café Carpe  in Fort Atkinsin, Wisconsin. Lamplighter Sessions includes three to four musicians, all on stage together, one of them usually being Peter Mulvey, rotating songs & stories and musicianifying and magicianifying together.

We are honored to have them bring a session ‘Up North’ to The Forst Inn for one night only.

Peter Mulvey on Lamplighter Sessions: ““I have been transported by music suspiciously often in this life, and from the beginning, I sensed a pattern: most of these moments were impromptu, they happened offstage, and they involved people communicating something sublime in this elusive yet utterly reliable language we all share. The music-ness of moments is at its best when two or more players don’t quite know where it’s all going, and yet have enough of a common idea of the map at hand that they’re all going together.

The Lamplighter Sessions is my dogged attempt to set up, year after year, lightning rods in a field, to coax these offstage moments into being onstage. It’s my favorite thing I do all year, and this is coming from a guy who tours Ireland and Alaska, who plays concerts in a cave underneath West Virginia, and who tours by bike in the autumn.”

Peter Mulvey

Peter Mulvey is a veteran singer and songwriter from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began his career on the streets of Dublin, Ireland, as a busker, and from there moved on to performing in the subways and streets of Boston.  This led to his first record deal and a leap to full-time national and international touring, beginning in the early Nineties.

Mulvey is an iconoclast within the singer/songwriter world. Restless and inventive, he has made seventeen records, spanning rock and roll, folk, Jazz, spoken word, and Americana.A long-standing gig at the National Youth Science Camp led to a spoken word piece, “Vlad the Astrophysicist”, which became a TEDx talk, and then an illustrated book. In 2007 he began an annual late summer tour by bicycle instead of by car and airplane- the 10th annual bicycle tour will happen this September. He has taught songwriting and guitar workshops at the Swannanoa Gathering and at various folk festivals across the U.S.

Bill Camplin

Bill Camplin is a singer/songwriter and acoustic guitarist who began playing professionally in the Milwaukee Area in the late 1960's. Bill writes and arranges his own material and has produced a considerable body of work.  Co-owner of the popular folk venue Café Carpe in Fort Atkinson, Bill Camplin entertains with the clarity of his penetrating mind, guitar mastery, and quicksilver voice.

Bill was an integral part of the Milwaukee acoustic folk scene for many years and appeared regularly at various clubs including the Blue River Café, Numero Uno's, The Crystal Palace, The Avante Garde and the 19th Street Coffee House.

Paul Cebar

Picture
Paul Cebar cut his teeth musically in the coffeehouse folk scene of the mid-’70s in Milwaukee. First paying gigs took place in late ’76 with an emphasis on solo recasting of small combo jump-blues and other early R&B. Upon graduation from New College in Sarasota, Florida, with a thesis addressing rhythm & blues varieties featuring a hearty emphasis on Louis Jordan and Buddy Johnson, Cebar dedicated himself to trodding the boards in earnest and spent substantial amounts of time testing the waters out in New York way while exploring band dynamics with a soul and New Orleans-minded crew called the R&B Cadets back home.

After a wonder-filled, winding career full of magnificent and magical musical experiences. Paul now needs the band Paul Cebar Tomorrow Sound.  Taking cues from the dance bands of western Louisiana (and his native Midwest,), the streets (and 45’s) of New Orleans, touring African and Caribbean combos and the soul, funk & blues of his youth coupled with early , teeth-cutting experience in the verbal hotbeds of  the coffeehouse scene, Cebar is a masterful synthesist of rhythmic culture.
