Inside Out Outside In: An Acting Workshop
Not Currently Offered

An exploration of the actor's creative process.
Acting training in the past 100 years has responded to the historical shift from the presentational to the representational. The implications of that shift for the actor has sometimes allowed a heavy emphasis on our internal, psychological processes. Should it? This sometimes gets essentialized into a dichotomy: do you act from the Inside Out or from the Outside In? The answer must emphatically be…yes!
This workshop will attempt to provide a holistic and balanced journey that acknowledges several essential elements of the actor’s craft:
Participants will engage in exercises from the Rasas of Sanskrit theatre along with elementary exercises from the work of Sanford Meisner to develop their performance toolbox. Each participant will work with text from one extended monologue and an assigned two-person scene to provide concrete context for the workshop exercises. At the end of the workshop, there will be a public performance of the developed work.
This workshop should accommodate all levels of proficiency and no prior training or specific knowledge is required. We will work with our colleagues in a journey that begins wherever they are and uses discussion, exercises and performance to guide our experience.

- The actor must be present and aware.
- The actor must have a toolkit of technical skills.
- The actor must engage the emotional life of the character.
