Auditions for Swing
|
Auditions requirements:
Please prepare a 16-32 bar vocal piece in the style of the show, i.e. jazz, does not have to be from a musical.
Be prepared to dance. There will be both a solo and partnered dance call. Wear shoes with a little grip, but not too much (ideally flats, not heels). NO sandals, flip-flops, or barefeet.
We are looking for your ability to be loose, play around, and have fun while also being able to execute the choreographed movements.
Register for auditions here.
Intimacy Disclosure:
Swing is primarily a partner dance production. All performers will need to dance with a partner at some point during the show. Partner dancing is inherently intimate. Most if not all roles will include (but are not limited to) contact of hands, arms, shoulders, back, lower back, waist, hips, and side. Other contact may be necessary to safely perform lifts, dips, blues dancing, weight-sharing, or stunts.
Other intimacy includes:
Ann and Everett almost kiss in Bli-Blip, and have a choreographed, short kiss during All of Me.
Laura and the Trombone player are portrayed in a non-physical, but intimate relationship.
Caitlin and the Bass player perform an intimate dance, with possible physical touch.
Several scenes are described in the script as “seduction,” “romance,” “fantasy,” or “sexy.”
A few of the dancers may perform moments of theatrical intimacy which can be flexible.
If you have any questions about the extent of physical touch required for roles, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Casting/Characters:
Swing! Premiered on Broadway in 1999. As such, traditional gender roles tend to be prominent in the script. Our production will follow the scripted roles, but is open to playing with gender roles and non-traditional casting based on the people who audition.
Swing! features many styles of swing dance from across different cultures. Lindy Hop for example originated as an African American dance in Harlem. There is also a big Latin Dance feature in the show. We would love for our cast to also represent that diversity and encourage people of all identities to audition.

General Information
Most productions at The Forst Inn are cast through an open audition call. In some cases, specific roles are filled by direct invitation or prior arrangement.
A Few Things about Performing at The Forst Inn
Actors and technical staff for performances are compensated based on total paid attendance. Thus, compensation varies depending on the size of the production ensemble and expected attendance.
Productions at the Forst feature fewer rehearsals and longer runs. You may find that this requires more work of preparing for rehearsals (line memorization and character work) outside of the rehearsal process than you may have experienced in longer rehearsal processes. To facilitate this, many productions avoid consecutive rehearsals within a given week. Those days when you are not in rehearsal are yours to do your own preparation. Thanks!
Production ensembles are required to arrive 90 minutes prior to the performance and are asked to assist with minor house setup and house clean up for each performance.
Rehearsals are scheduled to meet the needs of the individual production and are generally held on Sunday-Thursday evenings. Unless otherwise arranged, rehearsals are at the theatre in Tisch Mills.
Questions may be directed to Michael Sheeks at [email protected].
